Design Technology

Intent

Design and Technology at Moggerhanger brings learning to life! It is a motivating context to further develop and enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding in every curriculum subject. Through our high-quality, progressive and in-depth Design and Technology curriculum we develop and nurture the pupil’s creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed world. We provide ample opportunity for pupils to design, make and evaluate functional quality products which solve real, relevant problems set in a variety of contexts. Pupils at Moggerhanger use their D&T learning to become advocates of change. They have a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world; thinking about the important issues in life. We allow pupils to flourish as collaborators, enterprisers, risk-takers and problem solvers whilst developing their practical designing and making ability.

Implementation:

The teaching of Design and Technology across the school follows the National Curriculum alongside the Design and Technology Association’s ‘Projects on a Page’ documents. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.

Each class completes at least three projects a year, one of these being a food project. Each project is designed with the 6 D&T essentials in mind and ensuring that the pupils work in a range of relevant contexts. Each project has strong links with the class’s topic work and is designed to help the pupil’s learning across the curriculum with particularly strong links with Science, Maths, Computing and Art.

Across the primary phase, we ensure the pupils have a deep understanding of Design, Structures, Mechanisms, Electrical Control and the use of a Range of Materials (including food).

Each project is designed to cover the two main elements of D&T: Learning about the design and made world and how things work and the design and make of functional products.

We split these further into three areas of project planning:

  • Investigating and Evaluating Existing Products
  • Focused Practical Tasks/Skill Building Activities
  • Design, Make and Evaluate Activity

 

We believe D&T is a crucial part of school life and learning and it is for this reason that as a school we are highly dedicated to the teaching and delivery of high-quality Design and Technology curriculum; through well planned and resourced projects and experiences.

Once children Reach Upper Key Stage Two pupils are taught by a specialist Design Technology Teacher, based at our federation school, Sandy Secondary School.
